181cm.
Unbelievable.
This thrashes the old record by a massive 28cm.
What for, you're wondering?
Building a tower with 3 peices of A4 paper and a pritt-stick used only for sticking to be precise.
Can anyone beat 181cm? I honestly doubt it.
The architects and builders were Rebecca, Mitch and Cailtin. Well done guys.

Here a problem.
It's a two-part question:
1. If I had a piece of wood 8 feet long and I cut it in half, and if I cut the two pieces I then have in half, and if I then cut all the pieces into half again, how many pieces would I have?
2. How long will each of the pieces be?

... for the time being anyway. We've been using the Leeds Learning Platform for the last few weeks and it is great. We'll come back here to the blog with some photos of the exciting stuff we'll be doing but Year 5 homework has can now all be found on the LLP. We'll be exploring how to use the blog in conjunction with the LLP but bear with us while we really get to grips with the LLP.

Class Representatives

We will soon be electing our new class reps. You'll be able to use your blog to let everyone know why you think you should be elected. People will also be able to ask you questions using comments. You'll need two people to "propose" you. These people can only propose one girl and one boy. Please put the names of your two proposers and your reasons for standing in a post on your blog and leave a comment on this post with a link/web address to your blog so people can read it. Does that make sense?

Also you cannot be a candidate and propose people too. Please post any questions if this is all Greek to you...

I've sent quite a few people's MSE homework back. Please make sure you explain your method. I'm pretty sure I've explained this about 1 million times, so don't be offended.

Just in case you really have perfected the art of sleeping with your eyes open, here is the explanation again.

For example, when I ask you to show me how to "Multiply by 20", typing 23x20= 460 is not enough. You need to say- double 23 and multiply by 10.

I'm interested in the recipe and not the cake.

EXPLAIN YOUR METHOD!

If you've had your MSE sent back, have another look, spend a bit more time and get it right. I'll be giving you a score.

Leeds Learning Platform (LLP) again- 2

Everyone in the class now has a LLN user name and you'll use this to access the LLP.

A permanent link can be found on the right.

I've set some new homework. You get to it by logging on to the LLP go to Students and then Schoolwork.

You then click on the assignment.

Green Park School

Hi all,

I hope you're having good holiday and you're not working too hard (yeh right!).

I'm sure the space projects are going well.

I was having a look round for other schools with blogs to find out how unusual we are. I found this one.

It's called Green Park School. The amazing thing is I used to go to the school that is next door and Green Park (the park not the school) is where I spent most of my young life playing football. Great days. (sigh)

Have a look at their site. I think it's great. It's really interesting to see what another Year 5 class gets up to. I especially liked the activity were they taught and learnt a new skill. I think we'll do that ourselves when we get back to school. What do you think?

Have a look round the blog and leave a friendly comment. Make sure your writing is top quality otherwise Miss B might not publish it! I've left a message and Miss B (who is Year 5's teacher at Green Park) has said she will ask her class to look at our blog and they might do the same.

Maths self evaluation- revised

You should have recently recieved an email with a maths self-evaluation sheet attached (let me know if you didn't). The sheet is for you to fill out and identify which areas of maths you need to concentrate on.

I want you to save this document in you own googledocs and invite me to collaborate. You do this by clicking collaborate (top right-hand of page) and put in my email address. Please include your name and the initials- MSE.

Here's a copy.

5, 3, 1

Show me that you understand each learning objective and put 5, 3 or 1 for each one.

5- means you understand it completely and could teach someone else
3- means you're pretty sure but could do with a bit more practise
1- means you haven't a clue and need help.

I don't mind which number you put and neither should you. When you know what you know, you'll know what to work on and I'll have a better idea of what to help you with.

Please complete your copy for the Tuesday after half term.

Essential facts for Space Project:

It takes 24 hrs for the Earth to rotate on its axis.
It tokes 365 and a quarter for the Earth to go round the sun.
It takes about 28 days for moon to go round the Earth
Shadows are shortest in the middle of the day
Shadows are longest at the beginning and end of day

Please add these to you space project. Cut and paste is fine.

Bing, bang, bong and Google chat

I have showed you all how to use Google chat recently. This is bit like email but the messages are sent straight away, to friends (or teachers) that are online. If they are not online an email is sent instead. You won't be chatting with anyone you haven't invited or have not accepted.

Internet safety:
You wouldn't answer an email from someone you didn't know so if someone invites you to chat, don't accept the invitation unless you know them. Simple really.

Why chat?
Well, I know how much you guys love chatting, so I thought it would be a great way to help each other out with homework. If you get stuck, you can chat with a classmate that is online and they can help you. After all, you do this in class all day.

Bing, bang, bong!
Send me a chat message with these words in! If everyone does this by Thursday we'll get 40 minutes of free time in the ICT suite.

(The reason I want you to include bing, bang, bong is that I'll be able to search my chats and see, really easily, who has done their homework. If I choose other, more frequently used words, I would get more results in the search and it would take me longer to check who had done it.)

Remember you have a responsibility not only to do your homework but help others to do it too. Everyone in the class needs to do it in order to get the 40 mins in the suite.

Good luck. I want you to do it because I like free time too!

Spreadsheet homework

We've already done some work on spreadsheets this year- remember our Christmas present work and our spreadsheets about living costs? Well we're going to learn how to use google-spreadsheets.

First though, a bit of revision. These pages have got information on spreadsheets and there are tests for you to do. Leave a comment with your score on each of these tests:

Signs and symbols
Guess the formula
Formulas and order of precedence

This stuff is pretty hard but I reckon all of you can get really good scores. Email/chat to Josh if you need extra help with this.

Comments with questions or (shock!) comments are welcome too.
